For over 20 years, Women for Afghan Women (WAW) has been a lifeline for women, children, and families in Afghanistan and the United States. Our programs impact thousands of lives and restores hope every day.
The needs in Afghanistan are greater today than ever. Hunger is widespread, women’s rights violations are rampant, and the economy is in tatters. And, thousands of Afghans are still arriving at every US border with nothing but hope for a safer life and the clothes on their backs.
Can you help us continue to #RiseBeyondCrisis to support Afghan women, children, and families as they rebuild their lives in Afghanistan and United States?
In Afghanistan, WAW is providing emergency and humanitarian aid, including food and urgent non-food items, to thousands of families in need, including hundreds of natural disasters survivors. We are creating safe environments for internally displaced persons, with a focus on women and children, by providing counseling, training, and aid to combat gender-based violence.
WAW still cares for close to 200 children in our Children’s Support Centers.
And, we are constantly reassessing needs and developing new initiatives that extend beyond immediate humanitarian efforts, including economic empowerment and educational opportunities.
In the United States, we quickly adapted and expanded our operations to meet the needs of over 75,000 Afghan evacuees arriving in the US. One of our proudest achievements this year was the establishment of a new community center in Virginia, launched with urgency, and modeled after our New York Community Center that provides resettlement and other vital services for Afghan evacuees.
Today, WAW’s two community centers provide emergency support (including food, temporary shelter, clothing, personal hygiene products, and household items), immigration legal support, English language training, financial literacy, life skills and job readiness training, among so many other services and programs. We continue to work with domestic violence survivors through trauma-informed care, while educating partner organizations, government, and nonprofit agencies, on culturally sensitive support and domestic violence prevention and intervention.
With over 20 years of expertise in rising beyond crisis, WAW is able to meet the call to action to assist Afghans fleeing to the US and those forced to remain behind in Afghanistan.
Please donate to help us support Afghan families in Afghanistan and those arriving to the US.
