In just five days, three major earthquakes have rocked the Herat Province in Afghanistan, killing more than 2,000 people and injuring close to 1,700 according to the United Nations. The three 6.3-magnitude quakes — two on Saturday, October 7th, and another early on the morning of October 11th — and subsequent aftershocks have residents, already reeling from the ongoing political crisis and economic collapse, suffering the most precarious and difficult conditions. In one of the earthquake's epicenters, the Zenda Jan district, every single home was destroyed.
The devastating earthquakes have destroyed at least 13 villages. The majority of the people killed and injured are women.
Women for Afghan Women (WAW)'s staff and board have already mobilized our resources to respond to the crisis. Our teams in Afghanistan have already distributed blankets and tents. The organization has also committed to providing families with humanitarian aid packages, including food, hygiene packages, and cooking kits.
We are currently responding to the needs of the survivors of the Herat earthquakes with funds from our existing Afghanistan operations budget, but desperately need your help to sustain these efforts.
